Today, consumers are receiving
more email than ever before. Statista reports that in 2017, global email users
amounted to 3.7 billion
and 269 billion emails
were sent and received each day. Whether you are just beginning your email marketing
efforts or have been sending emails for years, now is the time to take a step
back and evaluate your strategy. Use these tips to create email
that grab attention and encourage follow through.
Think about your own inbox. What sort of emails do you spend looking at? Emails with some sort of design probably pique your
interest more than a plain text paragraph. Pull your reader in with images or design elements that are clean, interesting, and relevant to the email’s content.
Consumers today are skimmers. More
often than not, your audience is probably glancing over your email, rather than
reading every word. Use bullet lists and short copy to get your point across
quickly and clearly.
Calls to Action (CTAs) are one of
the tried-and-true tools that email marketers use again and again. What are you
trying to get your reader to do? Don’t make them search for where to get your product
or service. Make your CTAs direct and easy to find. And most importantly, don’t
go overboard. Limit your CTAs to one or two per email and keep the directions
(like “Visit our website!” or “Call our office!”) consistent.
Nail the subject line
Your subject line can make or
break the success of your email. After all, it is the first thing your audience
will see when they check their inbox. Make
creative subject lines
that are simple and offer an engaging
incentive to open the email. A discount, numbered list of tips, pop culture
references, or a personalized address are some ways to make your email stand
out from the rest.
Test on mobile
Most consumers use their mobile
devices to check their email throughout the day. Make sure your emails are
mobile-responsive and easy to use. The last thing you want is for your perfect
desktop-friendly email to appear jumbled and hard to read on a mobile device!
